In recent years, adolescents have begun to express interest in politics, but still, a significant number feel disconnected from the political field. Many question whether it even affects them, even though they cannot vote.
The political climate often affects teenagers’ political development and engagement with the political field. Studies show that most teens are either doubling down on their political opinions or rejecting politics altogether. Around 40% of teenagers aged 13-17 believe politics affects them.

Education policies and school funding, such as issues like climate change, gun laws, and social justice decisions made by lawmakers, directly impact teens’ lives. Not only do these politics affect them now, but they also affect the future of adolescents. Even policies that seem far from them, like healthcare, can affect their families and themselves.
Research also shows that teenagers who are active in politics now are more involved when they are adults as well. This can look like trying to stay more informed, discussing political events, or working alongside those events in their communities. Most voters who got engaged as teenagers report that they are more confident in their political opinions now.

While many younger teens go along with their families’ political opinions, more and more teenagers are gaining their own political voice. Across the country, an increasingly numbered amount of kids are speaking out about political issues they do and don’t agree with. Ranging from education policies to ICE.
Even with more teens participating in politics, many still wonder if it’s even worth it when they can’t vote. In reality, politics can greatly affect teens and their future. With so many things like social media and family opinions, it’s important to base opinions on yourself.
