For the last two years, the effectiveness of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has many people concerned for their jobs, the liability of video evidence and the possible end of an age of authenticity:
In case you have been left in the dark in regard to AI, I will present you with two jokes. One of them was one I wrote, and the other one was from an AI tool:
1. Why did the scarecrow win an award?
Because he was outstanding in his field.
2. Why don’t scientists trust atoms?
Because they make up everything.
Can you tell which one is the AI? Trick question – they are both from an AI. Artificial Intelligence has become so prevalent that it is difficult to determine human or robot.
In late summer of 2023, an AI chat bot running off of chat GPt was added to snapchat. The chatbot features reapply your texts to mimic an actual person and responds to prompts like ‘write me a break up paragraph’. However, there are ways to spot an AI message if you’re paying attention to how your friends speak. Ask yourself, does this person normally communicate in this way? Would they use that word choice? If you want to avoid the paranoia just avoid using text, and instead use things like voice memos and videos.
Artificial Intelligence has already taken its toll on real jobs even in our own school. Here’s what Mr. Jones has to say: “As of now it hasn’t had that much of a significant change, but teachers now have to be aware of this new plagiarism. As an artist, it’s worrying to see people have no appreciation of the arts with AI bulldozing through to the top.” In other parts of the country, people are fearing for their jobs. The writers strike in Hollywood is because writers are underpaid and now have to compete with near AI perfection and sadly have become obsolete. These writers are hoping to receive a guarantee that they will not be replaced by AI, as well as additional salary.
So far, there’s no way to combat this new threat in the online world, so as of right now doing anything online means that you must have a critical eye; question what you see, hear, and read: you never know if someone is using AI to manipulate you.
