3…2…1 “Happy New Year!” As 2024 comes to a close, people start looking back at some of 2024’s best moments and hits in pop culture and from around the world. From music albums to movies, 2024 had many hits when it comes to some of the biggest highlights of the year.
In 2024 many artists came out with new albums and some went on tour. But what are some of the most memorable moments in music this year? Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga have gotten a lot of attention recently with their new single Die with a Smile. Their song drew 119.6 million streams worldwide. It also gained 1 billion streams on Spotify in under 100 days. This set a new record for the first song to reach 1 billion streams. Another artist, Billie Eilish, released a new album Hit Me Hard and Soft. It is her third studio album and was released on May 17th 2024. One of her top songs in the album is “Birds of a Feather”. The song has been streamed 60.3 million times and reached No.2 on Billboard Hot 100.
Another notable singer from 2024 is Taylor Swift. Her “Eras” Tour is said to be one of the highest grossing tours of all time making over $1 billion dollars in sales. The New York Post said, “Although it varied slightly, the standard set list included a whopping 44 songs over three and a half hours. She traveled to over 51 cities and five continents and played over 151 shows during her tour.”
Many amazing events happened worldwide during 2024; these include the 2024 Paris Olympics. The total medal count for the USA during the games was 126 medals followed by China and Britain. One athlete representing China, Yefei Zhang, is said to have gotten the most medals during the games. He received a total of six medals during the games. Another athlete representing France, Leon Marchand, received five medals, most of them being gold medals.
Another memorable highlight from 2024 was the recent election. Two candidates, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, raced to see who would become the next president. In the beginning of the election, President Joe Biden dropped out of the election and Kamala Harris took over as the Democratic candidate. Donald Trump won the presidency with 312 votes in the electoral college, reelecting him to another four-year term.
On December 7th the Notre Dame cathedral opened in Paris, France after five years of construction. The fire in 2019 burned down parts of the 850-year-old building. And now, after five years, Paris welcomed many different leaders from around the world to attend the re-opening ceremony of the cathedral. They had the firefighters who helped during the fire attend, so people could thank them for rescuing different artifacts from the building as well as trying to stop the fire. They also had many different singers and musicians perform throughout the day, making it a memorable ceremony.
A lot of new TV shows and movies were released in 2024, but some were more popular than others. One popular movie this year was Moana 2. The movie came to theaters in November. Critics are giving mixed reviews about the movie, but it has grossed $601 million, which makes it the fifth highest grossing movie in 2024. Another popular movie was Wicked. This movie also made it to theaters in November. Wicked initially premiered in Sydney, Australia, and the film was named one of the top ten films of 2024. It has received four nominations at the Golden Globes. Wicked grossed $460.8 million worldwide.
Another movie that came out this year was Gladiator II. This movie was released on November 22nd. Critics have said how amazing the movie was, and how it was a must see in movie theaters. Rotten Tomatoes says, “Gladiator II is an action extravaganza that derives much of its strength and honor from Denzel Washington’s scene-stealing performance.”
